She started out as a Baby, 2025

Oil and oil pastels on canvas, stained wood
45x55 cm

“Hands in motion around a bundle, containing everything only time can know. She began as a pea, then a baby. The world itself, I mean!

The enlarged figure appears protective and vulnerable at the same time, while the dark and simplified landscape introduce a sense of eeriness. ’She Started Out as a Baby’ combines a portrait of my sister-in-law with a chain of purple mountains and white houses I have never visited. Rather than focusing on the act of breastfeeding, the painting conceals the object of the embrace.

The work was made shortly after my niece began saying, "She's coming back!” whenever someone left the room -as if reassuring everyone that absence is only temporary. The confidence in that statement made me think about my own childhood experiences of separation and the fears that can emerge from them.”

Exhibited at Havremagasinet, Boden 10.25.2025-01.11.2026.
